De la Légion d'honneur

Posted 13/12/16

The Legion of Honour, full name National Order of the Legion of Honour (French: Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur), is the highest French order for military and civil merits, established 1802 by Napoléon Bonaparte.

We have been aware of two veterans that have been invested with this medal and we felt it only right to honour these occasions.

Mr Frank Yates from the Sheffield branch of the Royal Artillery Association was invested with the French medal at the Wakefield Branch during their St Barbara’s day festivities. The Honorary French Consul for Yorkshire presented Frank with his,

I would like to thank you, Peter and all your members for helping to make it such a memorable occasion. It was certainly a day to remember, especially for me, and I cannot thank you enough. The Mayor and Mayoress and Jeremy and Mrs Burton (and Mr and Mrs Vranjes!) played their parts brilliantly.... I have not got over the amazement of having 5 RAA Standards paraded for me and “three cheers”.”

Also, on Wednesday 30th November 2016, Mr George Arthur Christie, was presented with the Legion d’Honneur by French Consul General Emmanuel Cocher at the Royal Scots Club, where he is a member.

Since 2014 the French government have been awarding the Légion d’honneur to all British veterans who took part in military operations in France between 1944 and 1945, and Arthur was one of the many who took part in the D-Day Landings over 72 years ago.

Before making the presentation, Consul Gen Cocher said the award was a way of honouring and thanking those who fought and risked their lives to secure France’s liberation during the Second World War.   To mark this special occasion, the Royal Scots Club held a small lunch for Arthur and his friends, which the Consul General very kindly attended to make the presentation.

Club General Manager Adrian Hayes said,

“We are extremely proud of Arthur. He is a very modest man and it came as a lovely surprise to the Club that he was receiving this honour.”
