At the end of the War, he returned to Newark, the town that he loved and embarked on a very full and active life of civic service. A modest , unassuming and compassionate man, he had a prodigious memory for names, places & events and could always be relied upon to impart warmth and a touch of humour into the most tedious committee work. He was always known for being well prepared, and always prepared with painstaking skill. With a broad grin on his face, he would often recall the army dictum "Time spent in reconnaissance is seldom wasted."

Newark Branch are very proud that when our Branch was founded in 1946 the inaugural meeting was held at his home and he duly became our first President. A role he held for many years. We were therefore delighted last night when his son William said that the family had deliberated long and hard about whether his father should be depicted as a young man or as a man in his middle and later years and had decided that he would be depicted as a newly commissioned Royal Artillery Officer.
