DE&S ‘Ride To Remember’ Op HERRICK

A team of six military personnel and civil servants from Artillery Systems, Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S), embarked on a 500km journey from Abbey Wood, Bristol to the National Memorial Arboretum (NMA), via the Royal School of Artillery, Larkhill.  The sponsored cycle was to remember the seventeen Gunner Officers and soldiers that paid the ultimate sacrifice during operations in Afghanistan (Op HERRICK).  The affinity DE&S has with frontline troops and the hardships they experienced led to the idea that the team would raise money for the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund (RACF) who help those soldiers and families affected by conflict.

With spirits high, the riders left Abbey Wood and negotiated Bath before making some good progress towards Salisbury Plain and Larkhill making it all the way to Burford by the end of Day 1.  Day 2 With tired legs we arrived at the arboretum at 1630 and laid our wreath during a short service in the Gunner Garden in the NMA.  Following an early start the following morning, 40 miles was covered before a hearty breakfast stop.  With renewed energy the group got back in the saddle and finally made it back to Abbey Wood by 1700.  With donations to the RA Charitable Fund still rolling in, the total currently raised stands at £1570.26.
