Children from Pembroke House, Kenya commemorate Lieutenant Thomas Sanders

Posted 21/11/17

Children from Pembroke House, a Prep School in the Rift Valley of Kenya, visited the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery in Gilgil on Remembrance Day. They held a ceremony by the grave of Lieutenant Thomas Sanders, Royal Artillery. The last post was played and the School Chaplain read a short prayer.

Thomas Sanders was 22 when he died of fever whilst serving with an East African unit in 1943. He had attended Blundells School in Devon and according to his local newspaper, had just announced his engagement. His parents lived near Barnstaple and on checking the census from 1939 we found that the family lived two doors away from a lady who would later marry Jomo Kenyatta, the future President of Kenya.

The Head from Blundells recently visited Pembroke House so was able to pay her respects by the grave of Thomas Sanders and the Royal Artillery Association kindly sent a wreath for the ceremony and the words from Thomas eulogy were poignantly written inside.
