Royal Artillery Association Standard to be presented to the Belgian People to thank them for their Remembrance of our Dead and for the warm welcome they have extended to us for more than a Century.
The Standard named "Stad Ieper" (Town of Ypres) will be presented to the Belgian People at a Dedication Service at St George's Memorial Church in Ypres on Tuesday 4th December, St Barbara's Day. It will thereafter be paraded by a Belgian National from time to time at the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony which has taken place continuously each evening since 1928, save during German Occupation during the Second World War.
The Standard has travelled from Larkhill to Folkestone, where it was Blessed earlier this month by a Priest at Half Step Hill, so called because those millions alighting from railway transport on their way to France in the Great War, thereafter had to march down a steep hill and were ordered to "Half Step" in proceeding to embark by ship. It was to be in many cases their last march ever on home soil. On Monday 3rd December the Stad Ieper Standard will arrive in Ypres where it will be paraded at the Menin gate at 2000hrs.
