lottery grant for new musEUm project

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a £287k grant to the Royal Artillery Museum for its ‘Guns On The Plain’ project.

The venture aims to bring together military, veteran and civilian communities at a dynamic, accessible and sustainable new museum and collections centre at Larkhill, near Salisbury in Wiltshire, home of the Royal Artillery.

The Royal Artillery Museum holds one of the oldest and most significant of all military collections, but without this funding from the Heritage Fund much of it would remain in storage and inaccessible to the public, with no way of safeguarding it for future generations.

We have more than 300 years of battle-hardened history – and so much of what has gone before, has shaped us into the modern fighting force we are today.

We are proud of that legacy and want to share it.

Major General Nick Eeles, Chair of the Royal Artillery Museum, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players we can now develop our plans to share the remarkable story of the Gunners, and their unique place in our Nation’s history, while ensuring that our extraordinary collection is preserved for future generations.”

Through procurement reforms, the Army prioritised fast tracking important weapon-locating systems as part of the Army’s initiative to modernise and double their lethality by 2027. Its accelerated delivery was achieved by the LAND ISTAR Team, working with Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) and Task Force RAPSTONE.
